About:

Derrick Breidenthal has been developing and producing fine art for over twenty-five years. His work has been showcased throughout the US. His work is heavily influenced by rural America. Some permanent collections include The Faulconer Gallery, Grinnell, IA, H&R Block, Kansas City, MO, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, MMG Worldwide, Kansas City, MO, W Hotel Collection, Detroit, MI, and Viceroy Snowmass, Aspen, CO. Derrick is a Missouri native, moving back to Kansas City in 2004 after 10 years of living in Colorado. His studio is based in the Crossroads Art District in Kansas City, Missouri.

Most of Derrick’s painting is done in a method called Direct Painting (also known as Alla Prima). This is a method in which each stroke is applied to the surface with the intention of letting it remain as part of the final statement. As the work progresses, each stroke must relate to what has already been placed on the painting. Ideally, when the last bit of bare surface is covered, the picture is finished, and no retouching is needed. The challenge of direct painting is that the painter must be able to deal with all the problems of the painting at the same moment.

Current studies focus on Midwestern surroundings and symbols as it relates to the human spirit. His low horizons and controlling skies evoke a variety of emotions. Derrick works primarily with oil on panel.

This is his Blog and you can usually find recent work, work in progress, various articles along with random postings of his day to day.
